The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

In the first book of the Mara Dyer Trilogy, Mara Dyer thinks she is beginning to go out of her mind. Waking up in the hospital, she learns of the event that kills her best friend, but the problem is that she cannot remember. Throughout the story, she battles the effects of PTSD, her mother, and the mysterious life that unfolds in front of her. People are dying all around her in the most mysterious ways, and what happens when a strange boy creeps into her life? Full of paranormal events, death, and young love, this young adult story received three stars. It was an entertaining read, however I did not find it as exciting as most other books. I felt like it was slow at times. The story line was very interesting and I will definitely continue the series with The Evolution of Mara Dyer (#2) and The Retribution of Mara Dyer (#3). The end had a very good cliffhanger that left you wanting more. It was a little bit disappointing in that other reviews placed the book under ‘scary,’ but I feel like it was more of weird and disturbing than scary. It was a satisfying read, but it did not give the WOW effect. All in all, it was enjoyable, but a little slow. 3 Stars.
