Monstrous by MarcyKate Connolly is a middle grade fantasy novel about a girl named Kymera who was literally pieced together by her Father. This book can be seen as a spin-off to the classic Frankenstein. Is she human? Animal? What is she? When her Father tells her of the mission behind her existence, Kymera wants to help the city of Bryre from the evil wizard. Girls are being sickened by the wizard’s curse, and it is up to Kymera to rescue the girls and bring them back to her loving father where they can be brought back to health. But what happens when a boy begins to bring all sorts of questions into her newly functional brain? Soon, she seems to have more questions than answers.
I gave this novel 3 out of 5 stars. The storyline was catchy, interesting, and new. I enjoyed how there were monsters, dragons, magic, and wizards all incorporated into a fun read. I think that many children and young adults would get absorbed into the pages. However, it did take me halfway, if not a little more, to really be drawn in. I felt like the first half was more repetitive in the life of Kymera, but I also see how the beginning also helps to set a solid foundation for the rest of the book. I will say, the middle and end of Monstrous kept me wanting more. The book was also quite predictable, but being older than the intended audience may have led me to see the connections easily. Overall I enjoyed the book. The writing style was easy to follow along with. It fully deserves the 3 stars.
