I cannot believe that I read this book in only ONE day!
Angelfall by Susan Ee is the first in the Penryn & the End of Days series. This story is a post-apocalyptic world where angels have attacked and taken over the world. In what is known as the “World After,” everyone is struggling to survive whether it is from starvation, gangs, or angels. We follow a girl named Penryn who is trying to take care of her wheelchair-bound sister and her schizophrenic mother. This is a challenge in an of itself, but when they are on the move to a new location, they are stopped by feathers that fall from the sky. That could mean only one thing… The next thing they know, they are witnessing a fight between various angels. It gets worse when they are discovered. While on the run, Penryn’s sister is taken by one of the dark angels, and her mother is nowhere to be seen. Penryn now has to figure out what she is going to do when everything is taken from her. She embarks on a journey to rescue her sister with the help of a mysterious, mutilated angel whom she has no idea if she can trust. What will she do?
I really enjoyed Angelfall. As I was introduced into the first few chapters, I had a Walking Dead feel to the story’s atmosphere. Everyone was too afraid to enter the streets at night for fear of being noticed and captured by the raging gangs or the frightful angels. The characters kept hidden in abandoned buildings for fear of staying in a location too long. Like many apocalyptic worlds, there is destruction and death described all over. There were many situations that were creepy and disturbing that are also known to be in these type of worlds. There are even worries of cannibalism. That was one part of the book that really had me feeling drawn in. I also liked how the angels were the creatures that people feared the most. As the plot progresses, we see that the reason behind the attack is unclear which leads to a hidden component that hopefully will be addressed later. The characters were also interesting to learn about. The relationship between Penryn and Raffe will leave you wanting more while just the characteristics of her mother makes you all antsy. Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I could not put this down, and I definitely cannot wait to begin the second book right away!! It is a world that you will want to fall into for sure. Who couldn’t love angels and other creepy unknowns being released into the world??
