An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Another Review 🙂

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir is a story of epic proportions.

Laia is a girl whose family has been killed by the harsh Empire, but her and her brother are the only ones left.  Laia’s brother has become mysterious and distant.  It is because of him and his sketchbook that their grandparents were killed by the monstrous Masks.  Laia has to do something.  She has to save her brother from the terrible Empire that has whisked him away.  She will go to such desperate measures that include risking freedom, life, and limb… literally.

At the same time, we meet a boy who is in his final stage of becoming a full-fledged Mask (a.k.a a highly trained assassin).  But will he stay until the end, or will he leave the cold, deathly world that the Empire has created.  All he has ever wanted is to be free from the evil that has been chosen upon him.  Graduation brings more for him and his friends than just celebration…

We follow the two main characters as they struggle through the hard decisions that they need to face in order to save themselves and those around them.  They both want to be free.  Morality, loyalty, trust, and strength are not the only things tested in this epic book.

I absolutely loved this book!  The characters were developed in such a way that you can start to feel as though you are a part of them.  The Commandant brings out the rage and hatred while Laia brings hope and strength.  Then there is Elias who just makes you wanna cheer for!  I think that Sabaa Tahir did a wonderful job in the character development.  Another aspect of the story that I loved is how captivated I became throughout the entire book.  There were moments when my heart was racing, and there were definitely moments where I was talking out loud.  I became one with this book… epic “feels.”

This book extremely, without a doubt, deserves 5 out of 5 stars.  I recommend this book for anyone who loves Young Adult.  There are aspects of fantasy, romance, action, and thrill all into one story.  You are kept on your toes!  Tahir doesn’t foreshadow to the point where you know what could happen in the storyline.  Things just happen all over the place which I really liked.  The ending left me wanting more!  This is supposed to be a stand-alone book, but I have heard that Tahir suggested that this could become a possible series…  I feel like that it could be finished here, but I have this feeling that is just screaming sequel!  We will have to wait and see.  I did not want to stop reading this at all.  You will find yourself spending hours captivated without even knowing it.  An Ember in the Ashes left me saying “Oh My God!” *insert jaw drop here*
