The True Calling series by Siobhan Davis is a young adult dystopian / science fiction series of intertwining love and tragedy.
In the first book, True Calling, Ari and her family have spent the last few years on planet Novo. When a meteorite devastated Earth, they were able to escape to a new world controlled by a new government. Little did any of the inhabitants know just how much control was being taken away from them.
When a new pageant is introduced, Ari’s life becomes destroyed along with all of her hopes of becoming a successful military personnel. Being forced to date, marry, and produce children within a crazy, short amount of time is the last thing a seventeen year old needs. The pageant becomes the least of her worries when tragedy after tragedy wraps itself around Ari and her family as the days go by.
Truths begin to reveal themselves as she begins to discover a new power along with a long-lost relationship back on Earth. But what can you do when your entire memory of the before-Novo time is wiped clean by the authorities that you trusted?
I gave True Calling 4 out of 5 stars, and you can find the full review by clicking HERE!
Beyond Reach is the sequel to True Calling, and we continue to follow Ari soon after the ending of Book 1. As I like to keep all of my ‘sequel reviews’ spoiler-free, I won’t dive into too much detail on what exactly takes place in this book.
At first, I found the story to be pretty steady/slow. Not too much was going on, so I wasn’t feeling as hyped up as I did during the first book. It wasn’t until the middle and end that the action and suspense really rose to the top. There were ALOT more tragic events that took place throughout the storyline. The characters really knew how to get on each others’ nerves. There are tons of blackmail, deception, torture, discoveries and fighting that you will want to continue to the end.
Towards the end of True Calling, I had a few suspicions on what was going on in the background involving Ari and the situations she was placed into during the pageant, and let me tell ya, my suspicion was right! When you get to the end of Part 1, you will be stunned out of nowhere. When she said what she said, I literally wanted to scream “Called it!” I had an itching that a couple of events were going to transpire throughout Beyond Reach’s story that I was drawn in completely.
At first, I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars due to the slowness and I had a little trouble reading a few times. I may have been distracted while I was finishing the book, so maybe that had something to do with it, but I ended up giving Beyond Reach 4 out of 5 stars. The middle and ending was such a thriller that I feel like it compensates for the beginning. I had a lot of fun reading this! The characters get on your nerves and you end up cheering for them which is great to feel from a book.
The ending does end on a MAJOR cliffhanger! All I am going to say about it is that I absolutely wished I had the third book in front of me so I could find out what she was going to say! Definitely a book I will be picking up very soon.
From the first two books so far, this is a really great series. The writing is very well done, the characters draw you in, and if you love romance, this series will be perfect for you. Siobhan writes very beautifully. I definitely recommend her book so far!
