Set in a world very similar to 1900s London, The Deathsniffer’s Assistant combines the investigative murder mystery with a tale of personal and societal redemption. It is about the relationships between broken people who clash more often than not, but manage to shape and learn from one another in spite of this. The story is told from the perspective of Christopher Buckley, young and impressionable and influenced by the prejudices of his time, as he finds himself surrounded by a cast of exceptional women whose differing characters will slowly reconstruct his understanding of strength in others—and in himself.
My Review:
At first, this book really confused me. The world we are introduced in was not clear in what everything was, so for me, there wasn’t a clear picture of what I was reading in my head. Continuing on through the book, the events started to take shape little by little. I think the book being a mystery novel kind of played into the confusion and mystique of the storyline itself. The unique dialogue also played into the confusion a little. Since the book is set in a alternate London, the vastly different world definitely fit the dialogue that Kate used.
The characters also were a bit wild for me. We had the anxious boy paired with the wild boss. This made the story have a humorous touch which I liked. The characters also fit into the mystery. I like reading murder mysteries and this one made you keep guessing. The stubbornness of Olivia makes you question who in the world the culprit could was.
Overall, this new book was interesting to where you want to continue to see how the story ends. I felt myself rushing a little to figure it out. I gave The Deathsniffer’s Assistant 3 out of 5 stars. It was entertaining but slow in parts. I was confused through most of the book which I think took away from some of the enjoyment. Other than the names of the different creatures, the writing was easy to follow. I found myself more engrossed with the murder aspect of the story rather than the background story. Definitely a must-read for any murder mystery lovers!

Kate McIntyre was born and raised in the frigid white north, having spent her entire life in Moncton, New Brunswick. She learned to appreciate the quintesstial Canadian things: endless winters, self-deprecating jokes, the untamed wilderness, and excessive politeness. She has been writing since she was five years old and nothing has ever stopped her for long. Her first novel was about a lady mouse detective saving her turtle janitor boyfriend from kidnappers, so it’s nice to know she always loved lady detectives. Kate loves crochet, video games, board games, reading, and listening to bad pop music very loudly. She spends several months of the year in Illinois, and the rest of the time lives in a big country home with two cats who refuse to stay on diets and the world’s friendliest dog.
