What do you get when you put a strong female character in the American Gold Rush?
Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson is the first in a new historical young adult book in The Gold Seer trilogy.
Set in the Gold Rush era in American history, we get to follow a young, strong girl whose world has changed forever with tragic events that have destroyed everything that she one knew. Now she has to take care of herself and find her best friend before she becomes the next victim. If they knew, everyone would want her for her power….
I found this read while attending a young adult conference a few months ago. It was featured as one of the “must-read” books of the year, so I decided to pick it up. I had heard a few good reviews here and there, but I hadn’t committed to buying until that moment. I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID!
For one thing, I love historical fiction especially with settings in the American past. The time period and the characters helped to bring this book alive. The main character’s special ability to detect gold fits in perfectly. As a reader, we get to experience more of the time period of the drive and commitment the journey west had on the voyagers. This book will bring all the feels from tragedy to sadness to laughter. Rae Carson did a fantastic job in bringing the Gold Rush into her characters. There is also a hint of fantasy in this series as well with some magical/paranormal elements with the main character which was a fun twist to the story.
The overall writing of the book was easy to follow and very captivating. I was so engulfed in this book that I finished it within a few sittings. The plot twists and character struggles will keep you entertained and always wanting to know what could possibly happen next. The ending of this first book will definitely keep you on your toes for the sequel to come out. It doesn’t end in a cliffhanger that will make you want to pull your hair out, but it gives you the sense that something epic could take place very soon.
This book deserves the full 5 out of 5 stars! I can see myself diving back into this world again before the release of the second book just to make sure that I didn’t miss anything. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of historical fiction or who loves stories with a strong female character. SO much happens in this book that I don’t want to spoil anything, so YOU WILL have to just read it to see what I mean. I feel like this book doesn’t focus on romance as most YA books do, but there is a strong focus on the love between family and friends.
This book is a great start to what I think will be a terrific trilogy! So much happens between the characters and the events that it will leave you captivated.
