Labyrinth Lost (Brooklyn Brujas #1) by Zoraida Cordova

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova is the first in a diverse YA story where the value of family brings a young girl on a rather paranormal adventure while uncovering her own powers in the process. img_0562

labyrinthI was chosen by the Deos. Even gods make mistakes.

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo she can’t trust, but who may be Alex’s only chance at saving her family.

Labyrinth Lost is a diverse, paranormal story full of adventure and finding one’s powers.

I really liked the Latina background with a Death-Day twist. This book has a family-centered value, and of course, the main character sets themselves onto a rocky start when it’s time for her powers to be recognized to their world. I will say that even though there are a few typical YA aspects (AKA – a girl who doesn’t believe in their own worth) to the book, it is delivered in an epic, unique adventure where paranormal creatures roam another dimension.

The characters are diverse as well. There is a hint of a bisexual character, but it isn’t the focus of the story and seems to fade in and out before you may realize it. There is also an eye-popping betrayal that I didn’t see coming. If you are looking for a diverse read, I recommend this one!

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. The culture of the magic system brought the new take to the brujas/witches. Since I really enjoy a good witch story, this book pleased my taste. Think of a sugar skull, and this book encompasses it entirely!

Stay tuned soon for my review of the sequel next week!
