The Telling by Kj Moullen is a YA Fantasy of a girl who’s about to have a lot of questions regarding why she’s in the middle of a new realm and who her mother’s loyalties lie with..
“Sixteen-year-old Blaine was a normal teenage girl. Sure, she moved around a lot, but that wasn’t completely weird, right? Then her mom tells her she’s actually from another dimension called Renault, whose inhabitants can do magic. Um, what? Suddenly, Blaine is running from an evil she barely understands. Blaine is thrust into the confusing, beautiful, and magical world of Renault with a mysterious boy she just met. There, she begins to discover her own unique abilities and her place in the universe.“
This book quickly dives from our world to the possibility of a whole new realm.. with magic!
I really liked the concept of this book. There are a lot of questions that you and the character share during the first half of the story. And of course, no one wants to give us a splinter of an explanation.
One of my favorite parts in the story is the mother. The development that comes from her is definitely unique and makes you want to read more. I was really surprised in how she played out in their magical realm and the consequences that she now has on her daughter. It’s not a twist that is normally seen in YA.
I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. The creatures are also unique and intriguing to learn more about. There is a romance mixed in but you’ll just have to read to figure out who it’s with.
The plot itself wasn’t too hard to follow. The dialogue was a little frustrating in that everyone was super vague, but overall this an enjoyable read!

How I Read It: ARC from Xpresso Book Tours
“K.J Moullen started her life as an adventurer. She always loved the outdoors, whether it was playing king of the hill with her pet goat in southern California, playing hockey on the frozen lakes of the Kenai peninsula of Alaska, or snorkeling and surfing off the shores of Maui. Amongst the breathtaking places she lived, her imagination and love for writing knew no limitations, allowing for a lifetime of plotlines and characters to be created and written about. She now shares her life’s adventures with her husband and two children in their home in North Texas.”
