The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is the start to a YA Dystopian series that flew the world by storm!
“WINNING MEANS FAME AND FORTUNE.
LOSING MEANS CERTAIN DEATH.
THE HUNGER GAMES HAVE BEGUN. . . .In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and once girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weight survival against humanity and life against love.”
I think we can all agree this series is such a classic in the YA Dystopian world. It has everything that we loved during tit’s initial release from the driven characters to the epic plot twists. Just an overall great series.
This is the first time I’ve ventured back into this world since the movie’s release, and ultimately is the third time I’ve read this particular book.
It’s one of those stories that just gives nostalgic feels when I open the pages. I initially gave this one a 5 out of 5 stars all those years ago, and now that I’ve really delved into the YA genre so much, I think going back to it, I give it a 4 stars this round.
While I really loved the well-written world-building throughout the book, the characters just weren’t my favorite at times. But as an introduction to the genre, I think this is a great starting point for many readers!
