Song of the Forever Rains by E.J. Mellow is the start of a new, Adult Fantasy series full of dark magic, unique creatures, and undercover missions.
“From the award-winning author of the Dreamland series comes a new dark romantic fantasy about a young woman finding hope in her powers of destruction.
The Thief Kingdom is a place hidden within the world of Aadilor. Many whisper of its existence, but few have found this place, where magic and pleasure abound. There, the mysterious Thief King reigns supreme with the help of the Mousai, a trio of revered and feared sorceresses.
Larkyra Bassette may be the youngest of the Mousai, but when she sings her voice has the power to slay monsters. When it’s discovered the Duke of Lachlan is siphoning a poisonous drug from the Thief Kingdom and using it to abuse his tenants, Larkyra is offered her first solo mission to stop the duke. Eager to prove herself, Larkyra accepts by posing as the duke’s potential bride. But her plans grow complicated when she finds herself drawn to Lord Darius Mekenna, Lachlan’s rightful heir. Soon she suspects Darius has his own motivations for ridding Lachlan of the corrupt duke. Larkyra and Darius must learn to trust each other if there is to be any hope of saving the people of Lachlan—and themselves.
Welcome to the world of Aadilor, where lords and ladies can be murderers and thieves, and the most alluring notes are often the deadliest. Dare to listen?“
If you are looking for a super fast-paced fantasy story with a unique feel, full of captivating beginnings and a twisted ending, this book is for you!
I don’t know if I’d necessarily categorize this one in the YA or Adult section as the writing feels like it could jump between both and the characters themselves are in their early 20s. I’d say if you are wanting a great bridge between the two, that would be another reason to give this duology a go.
Which, both books release this year, so you don’t have to worry about waiting for the next one!
What I loved about this book was the blend of a different spin on magic, the darkness of the world, and the wonder of what’s around the corner. I wouldn’t say this is a predictable story. But I will chime in that the middle parts did have a ‘blah‘ vibe to them as I was just wanting the main character to hurry her mission to the good stuff, but the buildup did pay off.
And, if you love just a dash of romance, there is that too. Nothing too spicy or too clean, a nice mixture of the two that doesn’t distract from the main plot. Just an added bonus.
In the end, I gave this one a 4 out of 5 stars. Like I said, if there wasn’t those few mellower moments in the middle, I would have bumped it up a star.
But if the synopsis sounds anything interesting to you, I’d highly recommend Song of the Forever Rains. I’m completely blown for what could be coming next! Hopefully we get to venture with one of the other sisters???..
